Studyisland

Studyisland is a wonderful learning tool that reinforces the skills we are working on. Students have assignments, which are graded, to work on. They may also work ahead on other skills too. Once a student has mastered a skill, they are awarded a blue ribbon. We will be doing things throughout the year for students who have earned a certain number of blue ribbons. Once a student has reached 75% mastery, the games that go along with the skill are unlocked.

Studyisland can be accessed anywhere there is internet connection.  Visit Studyisland. Your student should know his/her username and password.

*      We are still asking parents to join PTO for only $5. If our class has 100% of its parents join by October 4, the student will receive an ice cream party.
*      We have started reading logs. Students should be reading EVERY night for at least 20 minutes. Please remember to sign each night.

Yesterday, we took a trip to check on our garden spots. We can see where the seeds we planted last month have started to sprout. Here are just a few photos of the girls spot.

Multiplication 0's &1's

We have begun our quest as a class to master the multiplication facts 0-12s.  To achieve mastery, students must past a written timed test on each of the facts (with 80% accuracy) and past off each of the facts on Math Facts in a Flash (a computer program we have).  Once they have passed a fact they will receive an ice cream scoop to color and we will display them on the wall.  In the spring, all students who have mastered 0’s-12’s and have all of their ice cream scoops will be invited to an ice cream sundae party.

Last Friday we took our first 0’s and 1’s facts test.  We had a majority of the class to pass the written timed test.  Several students have already earned their first two ice cream scoops by passing the written test and Math Facts in a Flash.

Congratulations to them on their hard work!
Check back next week to see who else has mastery their multiplication facts.

Social Studies and Science

We have been busy!
Last week we finished our first chapter in Science and Social Studies. We learned about the different types of communities in Social Studies. In Science, we learned about plants. The students did a great job and had a fun time learning lots of new things!

The students brought in leaves and the class classified them.
Some of the communites we made in class.
One group's urban community.
This week we started with two new units. In Science, we will be learning about animals and in Social Studies, we will complete a unit on map skills. We have already learned a lot and we have completed several fun activities that go along with each unit. We still have some fun activities to do and a lot more to learn!
We made backbones.
We learned about the continents and oceans.

We learned about the compass rose and everyone got to make one.

*Labeling the Map Test will be Thursday, September 20.
*Map Skills Test will be Tuesday, September 25.
*Animals Test will be on Tuesday, September 25.
