Second Nine Weeks

We are half way through the second nine weeks of this school year.  Progress Reports are coming home today. Please sign and return them tomorrow.  If you have any questions, please let me know.
Just a few things to remember:
  • Multiplication Test can be retaken at anytime. They must pass off the written test and the Math Facts and a Flash on the computer.  Your child should have passed off 0-12's before we get out for Christmas Break.
  • Please make sure your student is reading and taking AR test. They should be reading at least 20 minutes every night.  They should be earning at least 2 points each week in AR.
  • Please be sure your child is reading his/her story and studying for his/her reading test.  They should bring home a study guide the night before the test.
  • You child can work on studyisland assignments at home.  These will help reinforce the skills we are working on in class.  (They are also for a grade!) Our goal for second nine weeks is 13 blue ribbons.
Have a great week!

Scholastic Book Orders

I sent home Scholastic Book order forms today. If you would like to purchase a book for your child you may send a check back to the school (made to Scholastic) or you may order online. These books could make great Christmas present for your student.  Most are AR books and they have some as low as $1.

If you would like to keep these books a secret from your student, please let me know and we can arrange to get them to you without him/her knowing.

Go to Scholastic to order online. (Our class code is H2WQK.)

All orders are due by Tuesday, December 4.  They will be delivered sometime before Christmas.

Thanksgiving Lunch and Turkey Trot

Can you believe it is already Thanksgiving?  It seems like just yesterday we were starting this school year.   I want to take this opportunity to let each of you know how thankful I am for you and the chance to teach your child this year.  It has already been a great year. I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving!

We celebrated Thanksgiving last week here at PCES, with our annual Thanksgiving Lunch.   Students in 1st, 3rd, and 5th grades had the chance to enjoy lunch here at school with the family and school friends.  We had a great time with great food!

Yesterday, students (and some teachers) participated in the 6th Annual Turkey Trot at PE.  They ran about a mile around the track, our school, and PCIS.  Students finishing in less than nine minutes received a turkey to wear on their shirts, so everyone would know they gobbled up the turkey trot! I blast running along with some of my students. They did an outstanding job!

Please remember we are out of school tomorrow through Friday. Everyone have a HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Veterans Day

On Friday in Social Studies, we studied Veterans Day.  We look at what a Veteran is, what Veterans Day is, why we celebrate it, and the history behind it. Mrs. Taff read to us the book America’s White Table.

The white table is set up at military functions and events to honor our Veterans.  It specifically honors those who are POW and MIA. We set up a table in our classroom to honor those who serve our country.

Each item is symbolic.
Small table – to show one soldier’s lonely battle against many.
White table cloth – honors a soldier’s pure heart when he answers his country’s call to duty.
Lemon slice and grains of salt – bitter fate and tears of families waiting for the soldier’s return
Empty chair – for the missing soldiers who aren’t here
black napkin – sorrow of captivity
glass turned over – for the meal that won’t be eaten
white candle – peace
red rose and red ribbon – hope that all the missing will return someday

Happy Veteran’s Day!

Election Day

Happy Election Day!

Our future voters celebrated today with flag shaped cookies, American flags, and read alouds of the books Duck for President and Arthur Meets the President.  We also watched a short video titled, "So You Want to be President".  Students then took A.R. tests on these Presidential Books.

Please stop by sometime and read the students' writings on "If I Were President".  They did an outstanding job.

Today's election celebration came at the perfect time.  We are finishing up our study of voting, citizenship, and government.  The students have had a fantastic time, and learned a lot about our country and democracy.

Don't forget to exercise your right to vote today!  : )
