Solar System Projects

To conclude all of our work on the Solar System, I offered students the chance to earn some bonus points by complete a projects.  Students were instructed to recreate a model of the solar system.  I had several students complete this and they did an wonderful job!

Planet PowerPoints

This week students worked in pair to conduct research on an assigned planet.  After conducting research on this planet, students worked to create and then present a PowerPoint. This was our fourth time doing a project like this.  The students did an excellent job! I was amazed at the wonderful job they did.  The research and the PowerPoints just keep getting better.

Box Tops for Education

Our school is still collecting Box Tops for Education.  This is an easy and fun way to earn extra money for our school.  Box Tops for Education can be found on a variety of things.  They are probably found on things you use every day!

All you have to do is cut the box top from the package and send them to the school.  We will do the rest!

Visit Box Tops for Education to see what products have box tops on them or to learn more!

Thanks!!

Science: Bonus Project

The Solar System- Shoe Box Diorama
*Science: Extra Credit 50 points*

Materials:
ü empty shoe box
ü clay or plain foam balls that can be colored
ü paint or markers (if using foam balls)
ü string
ü construction paper
ü aluminum foil crumbled into tiny pieces
ü glue
ü scissors
Directions:
Use your materials to create our solar system in your shoe box!

IDEAS
Shoe Box= the universe
clay or colored foam balls= our planets, Earth’s moon and the Sun
construction paper= the atmosphere
aluminum foil balls= stars
string= the orbits (path each planet takes around the Sun)

Tips:
·       Be neat, creative and accurate.
·       Make sure the planets are the correct color and size proportion to each other and the Sun.
·       LABEL THE PLANETS BY NAME.
·       Do not forget to include rings on the planets that have them.
·       Start with the Sun. Next, the closest planet to the Sun. Then, the next closet planet to the Sun and so forth.
·       Paste the construction paper inside the shoe box before placing the planets.
·       If it seems too tight to fit, find a way to combine two empty shoe boxes (of the same size).
·       Although this assignment is optional, it is STRONGLY recommended J

** If there are any questions, please ask!
ENJOY!

Project is due no later than, Friday, February 28.

Aquarium Field Trip

Dear Parents,

Third grade is planning our yearly trip to Atlanta.  We have tentatively set the date for Friday, May 16, 2014.
This year, we are planning on going to the Georgia Aquarium at Pemberton Place in Atlanta.  The Georgia Aquarium opened in November 2005 as the World’s Largest Aquarium.  With 8 million gallons of fresh and marine water, and more than 100,000 animals representing 500 species from around the globe, we’re sure to see things we’ve never seen before!

We estimate the cost (admission/transportation) to be $45 per student.

We realize that sounds expensive.  This is why we will provide the opportunity for you to pay as you can, provided that ALL money MUST be turned in no later than April 11, 2014.

This is an invaluable opportunity to help enhance and expand your child’s knowledge in the areas of Science and Social Studies.

In order to reserve our place at the Aquarium on May 16 we need to know if you plan on allowing your child to attend.  Parents are welcome to attend.  The cost for parents is $55 (including transportation/admission).  It is also due by April 11.

Please let us know by Friday, February 14 if your student (and you) plans to attend.
